Events at St Peters Episcopal Church

St. Peter’s Communion of Light Service

The service is designed to be inviting, peaceful, accessible, simple and spiritual. The service starts with the lighting of candles in a dimly lit space. This practice is reminiscent of the early tradition of lamp lighting as the commencement of evening prayer, or “vespers.” The liturgy of the word centers on the New Testament Gospel reading for the week. In place of the traditional sermon, the participants will be invited to share their reflection on the gospel reading. And similarly, the prayers of the people will request petitions from the congregational members. The remaining elements of the liturgy are drawn from a variety of sources including the American and New Zealand Books of Common Prayer, Celtic Prayers, and from the Iona and Northumbria faith communities.
